i’m going to miss you, foie.

hamachi tostada, herbs, fish sauce vinaigrette, peanut ($15)

melted petit basque, chorizo, grilled bread ($12)

soft shell crab, creamy lemon vinaigrette ($24)

pig ear, chili, lime, fried egg ($12)

poutine, oxtail gravy, cheddar ($18)

foie gras, biscuit, maple sausage gravy ($24)

balsamic pork ribs, delicata squash, arugula, pecan ($19)

flat iron, sunchoke hash, truffle parmesan fondue ($28)

foie gras loco moco, quail egg, spam, hamburger ($35)

tres leches, dulce de leche ($7)

Animal is one of those few places that makes me clap when my order arrives. My enthusiasm gets a bit embarrassing at times.

My favorite dish there of all time is the Foie Gras Maple Biscuit — one bite will seriously change your life.

Too bad for those who have yet to try it because come July 1, foie gras (fatty duck or goose liver) will be illegal in California.

Major sigh!

The Saguaro, Palm Springs.

Because I think I’ve developed a slight addiction to mini getaways, I spent this past weekend at The Saguaro Hotel in Palm Springs. Formerly a Holiday Inn, The Saguaro is “hip” with its LGBT…Q(?)-pride worthy walls. I use the word “hip” in parenthesis because what the hotel lacks in taste, it makes up for in major kitsch, which isn’t a bad thing!  I must sound like an annoying whining yelper.

The restaurant downstairs Tintos by Iron Chef Jose Garces was so delicious. I recommend just about every cocktail and dish on the menu. My favorites were the the duck and lamb pinxtos (pronounced pinchos) — no surprise there; add duck confit or lamb on top of anything and I’ll be into it.

Spent my 25th birthday dinner at Michael Voltaggio’s ink. on Melrose. (yikes. still getting used to calling myself that age)

Beautifully plated food and wonderful flavor combos and textures!

Cool ambience, minmal decor and great lighting. (bad overhead lighting can be so offensive at times)

 4.5/5 stars

Life-changing faves of the evening were:

the gonpachi with dashi sponge
the soft shell crab
the scallops and egg yolk gnocchi
the deconstructed apple pie with liquid nitrogen ice cream

Thank you friends for sharing this beautiful meal with me.

For those on a budget or time crunch, Voltaggio just opened up a sandwich shop next door called ink.sack with a very exciting (and affordable!) menu.

Sandwiches range from $4-$7 and all sound very appetizing and fresh. My friend Janice recommends the banh mi!
